Vatech made low dose the reason to buy 3D.
In 2013–14 Vatech, a Korean dental X-ray maker, rebuilt its cone-beam CT line around low radiation dose and aimed 3D at the ordinary dental practice. By FY2025, 3D was 62.2% of its parent-company sales, and exports were 92.6% of consolidated revenue of ₩426.4bn. Operating margin fell from 20.2% in FY2022 to 12.8% in FY2025 as selling and administrative costs outgrew gross profit, and parent-company 3D sales fell 8.9% in the first half of 2026. No valuation and no price target.
A general dental practice. On NRG's reading, Vatech's 2013–14 launches aimed to make 3D imaging a routine purchase for clinics like this one, with low radiation dose as the reason to buy.

A 3D market with a dose problem
Dental imaging in the early 2010s had three device families: intraoral X-ray for a few teeth, panoramic units for the whole jaw in 2D, and cone-beam CT (CBCT), which adds a 3D volume for implants, orthodontics and root canals. In 2005 Vatech launched what it calls the world's first unit to take CT, panoramic and cephalometric images on one machine. In 2014 the company described itself as No. 5 in the world and No. 1 in Korea.
Then dose became the argument against the product. In November 2010 a US newspaper investigation said cone-beam CT "emits significantly more radiation than conventional methods". European (SEDENTEXCT) guidelines followed in 2011, and in August 2012 the American Dental Association told dentists to justify each scan and use "the lowest combination of tube output and scan time". For a maker whose growth depended on selling 3D into ordinary practices, dose was now a buyer's objection and a matter of professional guidance at once.
European, US and Japanese groups led dental 3D: Planmeca, Sirona, KaVo and i-CAT under Danaher, Carestream and J. Morita. Sirona won a Mannheim injunction against a Vatech 2D feature in March 2012, and Hefei Meyer received the first domestic dental CBCT registration in China the same year.
A panoramic dental radiograph shows the whole jaw in 2D. The question in 2013 was whether general practices would also buy the 3D volume that cone-beam CT adds.
The PaX-i3D Green was unveiled at IDS 2013, with Korean sales from May. Vatech made dose the headline. At launch it claimed up to 75% lower dose than its earlier models and no more than 30 µSv for an 8×8 cm scan. It paired a high-sensitivity detector from Rayence, in which Vatech has held a stake since 2011, with a noise-reduction algorithm to offset the image loss that low dose brings.
Scan time at launch, PaX-i3D Green, 2013
5.9 seconds
Against about 20 seconds for typical units, on Vatech's launch claims. The company's FY2025 Annual Report says the scan "drew market attention to diagnostic dose".
The second half of the decision came in September 2014. The PaX-i3D Smart captured 2D and 3D images in one acquisition and gave clinics that bought panoramic units a 3D option one tier down. NRG reads the two launches as one decision: sell CBCT as a general-practice purchase and turn dose from the objection into the reason to buy. The filings are consistent with that reading, though no document from 2013 states it in those words.
On NRG's reading, two other paths were open in 2013. Vatech could have stayed a 2D volume maker and protected its lead in Korea, or taken on i-CAT, Planmeca and Sirona with premium large-field CT for specialists. It took the general-practice path, where 3D had further to go. As late as 2018, a survey of 157 South Carolina dentists found CBCT on site at 24% of general dentists against 67% of specialists, which shows the direction of the gap if not its size.
A ladder, a channel and a software layer
Over the next decade Vatech turned two launches into a tiered line, from the entry-level A9 in 2021 to the large-field Green X 21, FDA-cleared in February 2025 after a 137-day review. The filings call the A9 a cost-competitive model and make no dose claim for it. The mid-tier Smart X sold in Korea launched overseas as Green X 12, so the brand that carried the low-dose claim now also covers a mid-tier product.

The route to market was built in stages: a non-exclusive US dealer agreement with Benco in November 2009, 51.1% of Vatech America in February 2017, a Henry Schein distribution agreement in August 2023, and the remaining 48.87% of Vatech America for ₩18.2bn in June 2025. Consolidated subsidiaries rose from 20 in FY2023 to 27 in H1 2026.
A software layer followed. Vatech integrated Pearl's "Second Opinion" AI in March 2025 and launched the Clever One diagnostic platform that May, which the 2026 Half-Year Report says strengthens "customer lock-in". Rivals moved on price. In Q1 2024 Dentsply Sirona relaunched its Orthophos SL in Europe "at lower price points", and Vatech's own filing describes competition in Asia and emerging markets as "centred on low-cost equipment".
What the filings show, FY2019 to H1 2026
Revenue held near ₩385bn in FY2023 and FY2024 and rose 10.7% in FY2025 to a record ₩426.4bn, a 7.8% annual rate since FY2019. Operating margin went the other way over the same years, from its FY2022 peak of 20.2% to 12.8% in FY2025.
Revenue grew 7.8% a year while operating margin peaked in FY2022
3D sales reached ₩171.9bn in FY2025, Vatech's largest product line on the parent-company basis. The filings used here give product mix only from FY2023, so they cannot show the years just after the decision. Press figures fill part of the gap, on a basis that may differ: 3D was 63% of revenue in the second quarter of 2018. Vatech describes itself as No. 1 in the global dental CT market by units, and NRG found no third-party share figure that would test the claim.

62.2%
Parent-company (separate) basis, which includes sales to Vatech's own subsidiaries. Green models were already 52% of 3D sales in the second quarter of 2018, by the company's account in press reports.
Gross margin has stayed above 50% since FY2022. Selling and administrative costs rose from 29.5% of revenue in FY2021 to 39.0% in FY2025, faster than gross profit, so operating margin fell. The company blames inflation-driven costs, and press coverage adds spending on AI and software.

Exports were 92.6% of FY2025 revenue. North America was the largest region in FY2024 and FY2025, though in H1 2026 Europe moved back ahead, at 31.3% of revenue against North America's 29.1%. The home market filled up. Korea had at least 16,841 CBCT units in dental clinics and hospitals in 2023, about 0.9 for each of its 18,738 dental clinics in 2022. Vatech's domestic revenue fell 13.6% from FY2023 to FY2025, and the company calls the home market "mature".
A treatment room in a general practice. By 2023 Korea had nearly as many identified CBCT units as it had dental clinics in 2022, and Vatech calls its home market mature.
In H1 2026 consolidated revenue rose 6.9% to ₩226.6bn and operating profit rose 17.9% to ₩35.5bn. Parent-company 3D sales fell 8.9% while 2D rose 24.6%. Parent sales include shipments to subsidiaries, so the fall may reflect stocking as well as price, and unit prices are not disclosed.

What other operators can take from it
Dose was the case against CBCT in 2010–2012, and Vatech made a dose number the headline of its 2013 launch. A product facing a safety or regulatory objection can sometimes build its specification around it. Tiering then spread 3D across price points, but the Green name now also covers a mid-tier model abroad. A tiered line needs a rule for which tiers carry the flagship name.
Owning the channel has a cost. Vatech added subsidiaries in new markets while selling and administrative costs grew faster than gross profit. The filings do not isolate channel costs, but NRG reads part of the rise as the price of reach, which belongs in the product's pricing from the start. The last lesson is to treat a saturated home market as an early warning, since whatever sold the first machine may not sell the replacement.
Two conditions were specific to Vatech and do not travel. It could draw on Rayence's detector technology when it designed the Green, and it had a dense home market in which to prove general-practice CBCT. An operator without either would have to buy or build them first.
“Vatech helped make cone-beam CT a routine purchase for general practices. It now has to keep that category from becoming a price-led commodity, and to show that software can sell its machines as low dose once did.”

The filings leave three things out: street prices, who decides a purchase, and whether dose still sells. Vatech's "Leap 2029" plan, announced on 2026-09-29, ties imaging to AI and software but gives no revenue target, investment size or launch dates. Vatech's filings give revenue, margins and product mix. They do not show how far mid-tier CBCT street prices have fallen since 2023, who decides a purchase in a US general practice, how much the 2013 design owed to Rayence detectors, whether low dose still sells or is now a baseline every maker must meet, or whether dental buyers will pay for AI reading and practice software. Those answers sit with people who built, priced and sold this equipment, and reaching them compliantly is what we do.
