NEOWIZ built one console hit. The next one has no date.

In 2018–19 NEOWIZ, a Korean web-board and mobile publisher, put its in-house ROUND8 studio on Lies of P, a full-price single-player action game for consoles and PC. It self-published the game worldwide on 2023-09-19, and copies including DLC passed 4m by early 2026. FY2025 revenue reached ₩432.7bn, up 18.0%, yet none of the five in-house PC/console projects in the pipeline has a release date. No valuation and no price target.

NEOWIZ built one console hit. The next one has no date.
A backlit keyboard on a darkened desk. Consoles are a small slice of Korea's own game market, so a full-price console game from a Korean studio has to find almost all its buyers abroad.

Before the decision, 2011–2019

In 2011 about half of NEOWIZ Games' revenue came from two licensed games. Crossfire, developed by Smilegate and run in China, supplied about 40%, and EA's FIFA Online 2 supplied 8–9%. FIFA Online 2 closed in March 2013, and the Crossfire China contract was renewed that year on terms that cut overseas revenue. NEOWIZ blamed the two changes for a 34% fall in FY2013 revenue.

Home offered little relief. Korea's web-board rules cap monthly purchases and per-game spending on go-stop and poker, the core of NEOWIZ's Pmang portal. FY2015 closed with a ₩21.9bn net loss, and in March 2017 the company dropped "Games" from its name. The mobile RPG Brown Dust then lifted FY2018 revenue by 23.8% on sales in Japan and Taiwan, and operating profit reached ₩32.6bn in FY2019.

The wider market barely grew. Newzoo put PC and console games spending at $83.6bn in 2019, and three houses put the 2025 pool at $82bn to $88bn. At home, consoles took 3.7% of Korea's game market in 2018 and 5.0% in 2024 on KOCCA's count, so a Korean console game had to sell abroad. Later data show the odds: of all titles released in 2024 on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo platforms, new IP selling 100,000 copies or more came to about 0.8%.

What NEOWIZ committed to

NEOWIZ never disclosed when it green-lit Lies of P. In May 2018 CEO Moon Ji-soo said the company's biggest goal was global success for its own IP, and that NEOWIZ would keep investing to establish itself on consoles. Development began in 2018–19 at ROUND8, an internal studio whose head had run NEOWIZ's console development. The game retold Pinocchio in a Belle Époque city as a souls-like action RPG, with 30+ hours of play and no in-game sales.

The company published no analysis of its options. On NRG's reading, the chosen path built on two things NEOWIZ already had, a console team and a stated goal of owned IP. It also avoided the two dependencies that had hurt the company, on licensors and on regulated domestic spending. What NEOWIZ lacked was any record of selling a full-price game to Western players on its own.

A second decision came in August 2022, on the channel. At Gamescom, a year before launch, NEOWIZ announced day-one inclusion in Xbox Game Pass alongside its own worldwide release on PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and Mac. ROUND8 had about 160 staff by June 2023, a large share of them on the title. The budget and the Game Pass terms were never disclosed.

A pencil sketch. A single-player original carries years of development cost before it earns anything, and that was the trade NEOWIZ accepted in 2018–19.

Launch, DLC and a thin pipeline

NEOWIZ built attention before it had revenue. Company-wide marketing spend rose to ₩12.3bn in 2Q23 and ₩14.2bn in the launch quarter, 3Q23, and consolidated operating profit was −₩4.9bn in 2Q23. The game launched on 2023-09-19 and sold 1m copies in under a month despite day-one Game Pass access. PC/console revenue (incl. PC web-board) went from ₩27.0bn in 2Q23 to ₩54.8bn in 3Q23 and ₩61.6bn in 4Q23.

4m

Company-reported. Lies of P launched on 2023-09-19 and sold 1m copies in under a month.

The DLC was planned for H2 2024 and arrived in June 2025. Overture launched on 2025-06-06 at $29.99, and NEOWIZ reported record quarterly sales for Lies of P in Q2 2025. PC/console revenue (incl. PC web-board) rose to ₩57.5bn in 2Q25 and ₩58.7bn in 3Q25, up 54.3% and 59.0% year on year. The company also credits a new DJMAX Respect V DLC in 2Q25 and the Shape of Dreams launch in 3Q25.

The genre filled up around the game. Lords of the Fallen arrived a month after Lies of P, and Steam carried 371 souls-like releases in 2024, 41 times the 2015 count. Two Korean studios, Shift Up and Pearl Abyss, launched premium console games after NEOWIZ and sold faster.

In August 2024 NEOWIZ set a goal of one PC/console release a year from 2026. By August 2026 no in-house PC/console game had shipped that year, and five in-house projects were at stages from prototype to production. The sequel is at vertical slice, with no date. On NRG's reading, the cadence goal has slipped by at least a year, and published titles filled part of the gap: Shape of Dreams sold more than 1.5m copies in about a year from its September 2025 launch.

What the filings show

FY2025 revenue was ₩432.7bn, up 18.0% on FY2024, with operating profit of ₩60.0bn and a 13.9% margin. Against FY2022's ₩294.6bn and ₩19.6bn, revenue grew 46.9% and operating profit roughly tripled in three years. Not every change belongs to Lies of P. FY2020's 20.8% margin came three years before launch, and mobile revenue grew from ₩143.3bn in FY2022 to ₩195.6bn in FY2025, led by the NEOWIZ-published Brown Dust 2.

The clearer shift is in geography. Overseas buyers took 32% of revenue in FY2022, 40% in FY2023 and 51.2% in FY2025, and the company says about 90% of Lies of P's revenue comes from Western markets. The mix moved less. PC/console revenue (incl. PC web-board) grew from ₩126.4bn in FY2022 to ₩198.5bn in FY2025, but its share of revenue moved only from 42.9% to 45.9%, because web-board was already in the base.

51.2%

32% in FY2022, before launch, and 40% in FY2023, the launch year. The company puts Lies of P's revenue from Western markets at about 90% (February 2026).

H1 2026 shows what one title means for the line. Revenue held level at ₩203.5bn while operating profit fell 48.3% to ₩14.9bn, which the company puts down to variable costs that rose with mobile revenue. PC/console revenue (incl. PC web-board) fell 18.2% to ₩76.8bn, with no new in-house release. In February 2026 NEOWIZ said it had completed the move to a PC/console-centric model. In H1 2026 mobile was 51% of revenue and PC/console (incl. PC web-board) 38%.

Operating profit, H1 2026

₩14.9bn

−48.3% year on year (H1 2025: ₩28.8bn). Operating margin was 7.3%, against 14.5% in H1 2025.

NEOWIZ made a second move in May 2023, paying ₩18.8bn for existing shares to take a 52% stake in the mobile studio Pawgames. It booked goodwill impairments of ₩38.4bn in FY2024 and ₩7.4bn in FY2025. The internal studio produced the owned IP, while the acquired one produced write-offs.

What carries over

Five lessons carry over to other studios and publishers. Own the IP when licences can be withdrawn: NEOWIZ's revenue fell 34% in FY2013 after one licence ended and its largest was renegotiated. The owned IP it built next has passed 4m copies including DLC. Borrow a platform's reach before you have a brand. Game Pass inclusion was confirmed a year before launch, and the game still sold 1m copies in under a month. What that reach cost is not public.

Post-launch content can reopen the launch window, as Overture did 21 months after launch. One hit does not make a cadence, and on NRG's reading the missed release goal is behind the H1 2026 fall in PC/console revenue. The last lesson is to put the builder in the room. ROUND8's head, Park Sung-jun, became an inside director in March 2024 and took office as co-CEO on 2026-08-12, NEOWIZ's first developer-origin CEO. Whether that speeds up delivery is not yet shown.

“One hit does not make a cadence. The open question is whether NEOWIZ can ship a second owned PC/console hit before revenue from the first one fades.”

Public data cannot show whether the game paid back. Its revenue, budget and Game Pass terms were never disclosed, and the PC/console line mixes premium sales with PC web-board. The answers that decide the next title, on subscription deal terms, DLC and sequel results, and console budgets, sit with platform holders, global publishers and peer Korean studios. NEOWIZ's filings show how revenue, geography and the PC/console line moved after Lies of P. They leave out the budget, the Game Pass terms and the reasoning behind the decision. The next title turns on questions no filing answers: how platform holders structure day-one subscription deals and judge a Korean studio's second title, what DLC and sequel results are normal, what budgets and teams Korean console projects take, and how contested senior combat and narrative talent has become. Reaching the people who hold that detail, compliantly, is what we do.
